Introduction
As an avid cyclist, Julian Robinet has brought bikes from Germany to his new home in South Africa. Since he often travels for work, he lends them out to friends while he is away.
Seeing the joy they bring and the new adventures his friends (and friends of friends) experience on the bikes made him wonder if he could make something like this available to more people who really appreciate the opportunity through a brand partnership.
“Please just take it, ride it and have fun. I don’t want it sitting in my garage doing nothing”
Julian, July 2020
South Africa has a large cycling community with a long history. It has large turnouts for multi-day mountain bike stage races and the summer road racing calendar is packed. Most of these events although are sponsored by insurance companies, car companies, it can be very corporate.
Its diversity however, lies in a much smaller category. These are riders that focus on getting outdoors, getting fit and having a good time with friends. The bikes are nothing fancy – single speeds, old steel bikes, bikes most would consider entry level at best.
A lot of these cyclists may not have been able to enjoy rides past the city boundaries of Cape Town as they only can afford one bike or in some cases none.
The Idea
We want to invite you to join rides exploring your/their country and connecting the different communities.
What we would love to get from the rides are stories and images that share the experiences and showcase the quality of cycling across South Afirca.
